Industry 4.0 and Internet of Things

By Yanic Ménard

The concept of the Internet of Things (IoT) is basically very simple. Sometimes we also talk about Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) for the industrial sector. The idea is simply to connect physical objects to the digital world through the Internet. It gives these objects their own digital existence.

But Why?

Initially, it’s essentially about being able to remotely control these objects in real time, as well as to obtain precise information regarding usage, operating condition or performance. Rather than asking users to provide this information, with the entailed delays and risks of error, the Internet of Things makes it possible to set up a network that makes this information available in real time to those involved with decision-making, forecasting, maintenance or any other dimensions related to the use of connected devices as part of business activities.

Hardware and software integration and analysis of the collected data can have important implications for business processes and even business strategies. Some devices are no longer sold simply as objects, but as services.

SMEs have a lot to gain by adopting this new way of doing things that can increase their productivity, reduce their operational costs and even open doors to new markets. This mini Industrial Revolution can also facilitate the design and marketing of innovative products and services by smaller players. For example, when companies can better measure their production capacity, they can better match the needs of the market and even gain ground by diversifying their supply.

Security

Of course, security issues are central when it comes to remotely controlling devices or having access to sensitive data. It is therefore very important to ensure that the entire process is secure. The software development aspect then becomes crucial.

Good architecture and rigorous testing protocols ensure overall quality, both in terms of security and user experience. It is therefore important to call on specialists who will guide you in this process and target the best technologies for your needs.

CQRS—Event Sourcing

CQRS is a system architecture or design pattern that separates the act of reading data (query) from taking action (command) in order to produce a system which easily scales and provides some useful benefits (such as “playable” event logs) that make the maintenance of the system less burdensome. Do you care about testing?

I recently “talked” to my past self of several years ago, and we came to talk about unit testing. Back then, I did not care about unit testing. Today, I still do not care, but in a different way. Despite years passed, many of the issues raised in this conversation are still relevant. Do you...
